5 tips for the Dutch Surfer 🏄‍♂️🇳🇱

Let's be honest, as a surfer in the Netherlands you don't have it easy. One moment there are (for Dutch standards) really good waves. Then the next moment you are punished with 3 weeks of flatness. Mega annoying, every surfer has already forgotten your last (according to you) sick turn.

Well, The Old Man thinks along with you. We have listed 5 tips for you to make your Dutch Wavesurfing life easier.

Tip 1. Don't make it too hard for yourself. Buy a bigger board. 🏄‍♂️

We get it, you go to Bali one day and you see everyone surfing really well on a shortboard the size of a prawn cracker. You think, if they can do it on a board like that, then I can too.

Maybe it worked in Bali, but in the Netherlands there are so many less waves that you just want to surf on a nice big board. This way you catch a lot of waves. Remember, more waves = more fun. Don't make it too difficult for yourself. Buy a bigger board . 🌊

Tip 2. Stop surfing. (Just kidding). Surf as often as you can. 🔄🌊

Due to the few waves, the learning curve for surfing in the Netherlands is very long. This is why it is necessary to go as often as possible.

Are there waves but you have to work? Talk to your boss that you would rather work in the evening instead of during the day. Or fake a sore throat, I always do that too. 😷

Good surf? But also an appointment with the in-laws? Unfortunately, you have to work overtime. Damn, sorry mother-in-law! 😅

Don't be afraid to make excuses and surf as much as you can.

Tip 3. Invest in good gear. 🛒🏄‍♂️

Since surfing in the Netherlands is not easy, it is nice if you have some good material. Think of a wetsuit that is not too stiff, a leash that is not too clumsy or a nice light surfboard. It just makes it all a bit easier, and therefore more fun.

I just happen to know a place that has all that under one roof;)

Tip 4. Subscribe to forecasts. 📱🔍

Do you find it difficult to plan when to go surfing? With only your senses it is not that easy either. Therefore subscribe to platforms like Goede Golven or Windguru. This way you can easily see when which surfing conditions will take place.

Tip 5. Buy a (waterproof) changing poncho. 🧥🌧️

Changing clothes in the parking lot of a Dutch surf spot is not for people made of sugar. Literally, it rains all the time.
